The National LSAC Applicant Pool and Excess Whiteness

 

EW OverviewThe national LSAC application pool for 2017 through 2019 was 60.1% White.

Excess Whiteness for a school is calculated by subtracting the percentage of White students in the first-year enrollment for 2017 through 2019. In other words, Excess Whiteness was the number of percentage points over 60.1%. 

Of the 200 law schools in this report, 153 (76.5%) had more White students in their first-year class than there were in the national LSAC application pool. 

Of the 153 law schools with excess Whiteness, the minimum number of Excess Whiteness points was .3. The maximum number of Excess Whiteness points was 31.8, meaning that a school was 91.9% White. The mean (average) number of Excess Whiteness was 14.5. Half the schools had Excess Whiteness below 14.9 points.

 


 

 

Correlations

   

  • Historically White Schools. Schools that were not historically White had no Excess Whiteness based on the LSAC national applicant pool. The difference from historically White schools (12 points) was statistically significant (p=.000).
     
  • Public vs. Private. Public law schools (13 points) had more national Excess Whiteness than private law schools (9 points). This difference was statistically significant (p=.002).
     
  • Tier. Third-tier law schools (13 points) had the most national Excess Whiteness, and fourth-tier law schools had the least (8 points). This difference was statistically significant (p=.001).

  • States. Law schools in Hawaii, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico had no Excess Whiteness. South Dakota and West Virginia had mean national Excess Whiteness of  30 points. The difference between states was statistically significant (p=.000).

  • Region. The Far West has the lowest national Excess Whiteness (1 point). The Midwest (21 points) had the highest mean difference. This difference was statistically significant (p=.000).
